Byron Hale Delavan CANANDAIGUA - Byron Hale Delavan, age 91, passed away, after a brief illness, on Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2020. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Caroline; son, Byron Hale (Allison) Delavan Jr.; and grandson, James Hale Delavan. Byron was born in Skaneateles, N.Y., and was the son of Nathan Hale and Jessie (Lay) Delavan. He was a graduate of The Hill School in Pennsylvania, attended Cornell University and was a graduate of Babson College. Byron was a U.S. Navy veteran. Upon graduation from Babson, he joined the family business, Delavan Corrugated Box Inc. in Syracuse, N.Y. After the family business was sold to the Mead Corporation, he worked there for a short time. Byron later joined A. B. Cowles & Co. in Victor, where he founded and serviced a children's book division and commuted to New York City for 25 years. Byron was a member and former board president of the Ontario County Historical Society and a longtime board member of the Granger Homestead Society. He was also a member of the Merrill Hose Volunteer Fire Co., Canandaigua Country Club, Canandaigua Sportsman's Club and the Canandaigua Scientific Association. Byron was awarded Mr. Canandaigua by the Chamber of Commerce in 2017. The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 11, from 1 to 5 p.m. at their home at 164 N. Main St., Canandaigua.
