Martha Weissberger Nee Wooster
Martha Weissberger, nee Wooster Rochester - September 22, 2020, at home, Rochester New York. Born March 3, 1924 in Old Westbury, Long Island; grew up in New York and Albany. Educated at The Madeira School and Smith College, where she studied English literature and especially loved the study of Chaucer. After college, worked in publishing until she married, moved to Rochester, brought up four children and became an active member of the community, serving numerous organizations in leadership roles, including the Memorial Art Gallery, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the Rochester Association of the United Nations, and Writers & Books. She also volunteered throughout her life, serving as literacy coach, mentor for ex-offenders, and aide to the dying in the early days of the AIDS crisis. Her greatest loves included her family and friends and the landscapes she grew to call home, in Western New York State and in her beloved Ireland. Predeceased by her husband, Robert Joseph Calihan of Rochester; her husband, Arnold Weissberger of Rochester; and by her siblings, Charles, Ann and Richard Wooster. Survived by four children and nine grandchildren; Robert Barnes Calihan (Nana Bennett) of Rochester and their children, Jessie, Eliza and Kate; Martha Calihan Beardsley (Charles, deceased) of Leesburg, Virginia and their son, Conor; Sara Calihan Koch of Newton, Massachusetts and her children, Elizabeth (Thomas Cole) and Austin; and Elizabeth Wooster Calihan (Mark George) of Wilmette, Illinois and her children, Samuel, Eleanor and Elias Wachtel. Grateful appreciation for the devoted care provided in the last years of her life by Sue Gyore. A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, September 26, 10 AM at St. Mary's Church, 15 St. Mary's Place.
