Dr. Gene Barry Chase
Dr. Gene Barry Chase was born in Southampton, NY in 1943. He died on September 14, 2020 at age 76. The first of his generation to attend college, Gene attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he graduated in 1965. He completed his doctoral studies in math education at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. He taught math at Wells College and Houghton College before moving to central Pennsylvania to teach math and computer programming at Messiah College for almost 35 years. On his sabbaticals, he volunteered with Wycliffe Bible Translators, serving in both Texas and Peru. He was one of the founders of the international Association of Christians in the Mathematical Sciences. He also coached Messiah's computer programming team and went with the team to Hawaii for IBM's international computer programming competition. After retirement, he taught math at Dickinson College part time. After moving to Messiah Village in 2017, he volunteered his time regularly to help fellow residents resolve problems with their computers. Gene was the only son of Claude Roy Chase, deceased, and Mary Cavanaro Chase, deceased. He is survived by Emily Vera Parke, his wife of 46 years, and three children, Timothy Chase (Elizabeth) of Frisco, Texas; Priscilla DeRosa (Anthony) of Woodbine, MD; and John Chase (Kelly) of Rockville, MD. In addition, Gene enjoyed the pleasure of his eight grandchildren. A wonderful husband and loving father, Gene was a man of faith. He taught Bible classes for many years at his church, West Shore Evangelical Free Church, Mechanicsburg, PA. His hobbies included doing research on the Internet and working on his family's genealogical tree. The family will hold a memorial service some time in the future at the family's convenience.
