Karl Heinz Nollstadt Loving husband and father, U.S. Air Force veteran, retired from Merck Karl Heinz Nollstadt, 91, passed away peacefully April 20, 2020. Karl was born and grew up in Wiesbaden Germany, the son of Wilhelm Christian Nollstadt and Johanna Helene (Fendel). He came to the United States in 1951 and served as a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. After his service in the Air Force, Karl went on to complete his undergraduate studies at Kent State University, followed by earning his master's degree in biochemistry from Cornell University. In 1964, Karl began his 33-year long career at Merck & Co. Inc. in Rahway New Jersey. Karl was a successful and well published biochemist and inventor, securing numerous patents for Merck & Co, Inc., with one of the most notable being the research and development of the Pneumococcal vaccine, more commonly known as Pneumovax 23. Karl was a life long resident of Clark New Jersey, where he was a devout Catholic and active member of St. Agnes Parish, serving as a catechist for over ten years and as a Eucharistic minister for many more. He loved his church and loved his faith. He was a quiet man with a gentle kindness, extreme integrity, and a gentleman through and through. He will be dearly missed. Karl was predeceased by his sister, Anneliese Hodovanec. He is survived by his wife, Mary Jacqueline; daughter Mary Beth Nollstadt; sons Tim, Christopher and wife Lisa, Kevin and wife Russa; ten beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren and his niece and nephews. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Agnes Parish Clark, N.J., on September 19 at 11 a.m. Arrangements are by Rossi Funeral Home www.therossifuneralhome.com In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Resident and/or Staff Fund c/o Brakeley Park Center, 290 Red School Lane, Phillipsburg, NJ 08865 or St. Agnes Parish, 332 Madison Hill Road, Clark, NJ 07066.
