Marie Ann Mullen
Marie Ann Mullen Born: April 16, 1932 Died: August 17, 2020 Ann connected with everyone through her caring and nurturing. She made phone calls, visited, and sent home-made cards to keep in touch and to brighten someone's day. She was constantly positive and sunny. She liked to give presents. She liked to celebrate birthdays and holidays. She liked games. The last year of Ann's life was tough. She caught COVID and recovered. Her kidneys were failing. Family was with her when she passed away. A memorial service is planned for next year when, we hope, COVID subsides. Ann lived in Downers Grove most all her life and attended First Congregational Church for over 80 years. Ann taught nursery school at the church for years, and Sunday School for longer. She served as Den Mother in Cub Scouts and helped with Brownies, Girl Scouts, and 4-H. Her files overflowed with curriculum materials, art projects, and newspaper clippings. Ann was an accomplished and heralded baker, skills learned from her mother. The two of them turned out bread and cinnamon rolls and decorated cookies and cakes. During WWII, they would save butter and sugar ration coupons to make holiday treats. For St. Patrick's Day, Ann made bread for her children's lunches-colored green. At Christmas time, many friends got cinnamon-roll wreaths. Ann attended Washington School, Downers Grove High School (before there was a North and South), and Coe College, where she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta. She married Wayne Mullen, who she met at Coe. Ann and Wayne raised their family in a home with her parents, with daily interaction between children and grandparents. As a grandmother, Ann lived with her youngest son's family and helped bring up her grandchildren in that family. Ann arranged flowers at Herrick's Flower Shop. She cooked lunches at North High. She retired from InterVarsity Press where she answered calls from dissatisfied customers and satisfied them. Helping customers fed her spirit. Ann was preceded in death by her husband Wayne, her parents Roger and Marie Tea, and her brother Sherm; by Wayne's parents James and Ruth Mullen, brother Bruce and wife Sue, and sister Marsha. She leaves behind her sister Phyl and husband Bill; children Ken and wife Christine, Linda and husband Mark, Terri and husband Steve, Jeff and wife Candy, and Glenn and wife Rhonda; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, other family, and friends everywhere. The family invites your stories at www.toonfuneralhome.com/obituary/marie-mullen where there is a more detailed obituary. Memorials may be given in her memory to First Congregational Church of Downers Grove, 1047 Curtiss Street, Downers Grove, IL 60515 or to Downers Grove Public Library, 1050 Curtiss Street, Downers Grove, IL 60515.
