Kelly, Karl 10/17/1943 - 8/6/2020 Montague Karl Taylor Kelly, 76 years old Montague, MI Passed away on Thursday, August 06, 2020. Karl Taylor Kelly was born in Davenport, Iowa on October 17, 1943 and passed away on August 06, 2020 surrounded by loved ones. However, the birth and death of this wonderful man is not nearly as relevant as all the days he lived in between. Karl was a twin and one of five siblings. He graduated from Montague High School in 1961. Shortly after, Karl joined the Army and went to Vietnam in 1966, where he served as a Recon Scout. He was proud of his two Masters Degrees from Michigan State University and Western Michigan University where he majored in Education and Administration. Karl spent 35 years with Shelby Public Schools, where he shared his knowledge and love of education as a councilor, 6th grade teacher, math teacher and part-time principle. Karl was a Christian and loved helping others. He had a way of understanding what his students were struggling with and could relate to them on many levels. Karl spent his retirement with his beloved wife, Patty. They enjoyed traveling and spending time at their cabin up north. One of their most memorable trips was to Costa Rica in 2005. Karl was also an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing, golfing and hunting. He had many stories of his boar hunting adventures in Florida. When Karl wasn't outside, he was playing cards, dominoes or mastering Sudoku. He learned early on how to play the stock market from his dad. Karl and Patty enjoyed all of the ups and downs of the game throughout their lives together. Karl looked forward to relaxing in the sauna and was always reading something and continually learning. Many will remember Karl for his intelligence and quick wit, but his grandkids will remember him for his funny jokes and teaching them how to play dominoes and do their math homework. Karl will be missed every day by his loving wife, Patty of 25 years, his children Gary (Rachael) Burns, Joe (Anna) Burns, Karl (Sylvia) Kelly Jr., and Kristy (Larry) Postema and his 10 grandkids and many other close family and friends. Karl lived a full and happy life and we are honored to have had him a part of ours. The family will be having a private gathering to celebrate all the amazing things Karl contributed to this world.
