Shirley Lou Smoot Bush, 81, passed away peacefully at St. Martin's in the Pines in Birmingham on July 31, 2020 after a brief illness. She was born on October 14, 1938 to Earl Roy Smoot and Reva Austin Smoot in High Point, NC. Her father named her after Shirley Temple. The family moved to Hampton, VA where her father took a job with NACA (NASA) at Langley Field at the end of WWII. Shirley graduated from Hampton High School and began working as secretary for the senior pastor of her church, Memorial Baptist. It was there she met Freddie Mitchell Bush, a native of Troy and Hartford, AL, who was stationed at Langley Air Force Base. The couple married on June 14, 1959 at Memorial Baptist Church and remained married for 30 years. They moved to Auburn where Shirley worked for the Dean of the School of Education while Fred completed his engineering degree at Auburn University. In her final years in Huntsville, she joined Valley Fellowship Church, with whom she visited the Holy Land in Israel, which she calls the most impactful trip of her life. She moved to Birmingham in 2000 to be near two of her children and their families. She joined the Church at Brook Hills and enjoyed many years of fellowship with her Sunday School Class with the Women's Ministry.
