In memory of
Roberta M. (Horning) Cohen
Roberta M. (Horning) Cohen Nov. 8, 1937 - July 27, 2020 Roberta Margaret Cohen passed away peacefully in her home on Monday at the age of 82 surrounded by her loving family. Born in British Columbia to Robert and Margaret (Covington) Horning, Roberta's family moved to Portland in 1942. After graduating from Franklin High School ('55) and University of Oregon ('59), Roberta began a long career of teaching, which took her to England in 1962, where she met her husband. They married in 1963, returned to Portland in 1965, and had two children. Roberta started teaching at the Catlin Gabel School in 1977, retiring in 2004 after a lengthy career as a revered teacher and administrator. Roberta was a pianist and harpsichordist extraordinaire, a lover of music, a world traveler, a supreme conversationalist with a flare for the festive and an infectious laugh, and a most gracious, kind, warm, and open woman. She is survived by her adoring family – her husband, Matt; children, Michael (Maria Cohen) and Rachel (Sharonann Lynch); grandchildren, Miles, Will, and Asher; and an enormous web of devoted friends around the world. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Portland Baroque Orchestra, Minds Matter of Portland, and/or Chamber Music Northwest.
