In memory of
LEFTWICH, June June Storey Leftwich died on July 28. Born near Henderson, Texas on June 19, 1932 to Robert T. and Leta Storey, she grew up in small towns in East Texas, where her father built roads during the Depression. In the 1940s the family moved to Dallas. June graduated from North Dallas High School in 1948, then worked at Neiman-Marcus and for the airline KLM. In 1952 she married James M. (Mac) Leftwich, a Navy aviator. Together they lived around the U.S. and overseas, with a growing family -- Wade (born in Dallas), Frankie (Georgia), Genie (Ohio), and Robbie (Spain). In the early 1970s, Mac retired from the Navy and the family returned to Dallas. June went to work at the old downtown Dallas Public Library, one of her favorite places in her high school years, starting at the circulation desk. In her career there she became liaison to the Friends of the Library and, when the present library facility opened, started a museum-style store on the main floor. After retiring from the Library she remained very involved with books and readers, managing a bookstore, then owning Storey Books, an online used and rare books business, in the early days of the internet. June was a vigorous participant in and organizer of support activities for the city's libraries, and served as president of the Friends of the Dallas Public Library and as a member of the Lakewood Library Friends board. June's parents, her brother Bob, and her beloved husband Mac all passed away before her. She is remembered with love by her children, grandchildren Max, Molly, Leta, Wade, and Alex, extended family, and many friends. June will be buried beside her husband at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, in a private ceremony. Her family will hold a celebration of June's life sometime in the future when it is safe for family and friends to gather together. In lieu of flowers, a contribution to the Lakewood Library Friends ( http://www.lakewoodlibraryfriendsdallas.org ) in June's name would be appreciated.
