Marcellene Joan Hultstedt Howland
GALESBURG - Marcellene Joan Hulstedt Howland of Galesburg passed on to join Raymond, the love of her life, on Monday, July 27, 2020, at the Knox County Nursing Home in Knoxville, surrounded by family. Marcy was born at home on the family farm near Woodhull, on Oct. 20, 1929, to Manfred and Margery Hulstedt. She was their only child and the only grandchild on her mother's side of the family. She attended Maple Ridge School, a one-room schoolhouse near her home, and graduated from Woodhull High School in 1947 as valedictorian. She then enrolled in the School of Nursing at Moline Public Hospital, where she made many lifelong friends before graduating as a registered nurse. While attending school, she met Raymond Marshall Howland of Galesburg, who was in the U.S. Navy at the time, at the "Rooftop Garden" in Galesburg. They married on Oct. 7, 1950, and lived in Galesburg while Ray finished his tour with the Navy and Marcy worked as an RN at Galesburg Cottage Hospital. Together, they had four children, Sherry Ellene (deceased), David Loren Howland, John Manfred Howland and Charles Duane Howland. Ray worked for the CB&Q Railroad and they farmed together with her father for many years. Ray retired as a carman from the BN in 1991. Marcy was a lifelong member of the JOH club and enjoyed cooking, canasta, bunco, fishing, traveling, gardening and volunteering at Trinity Lutheran Church. The family had many travel adventures over the years, and she and Ray continued to travel seeing the country and visiting the kids throughout their lives together. She especially enjoyed their trip to Hawaii. She was preceded in death by her parents, Manfred and Margery Hulstedt; her husband, Raymond; daughter, Sherry (and Perry Kirkpatrick); brothers-in-law John Richard Howland and Alfred Hayden; sisters-in-law Kathy (Howland) Pearcy and Betty (Hoxworth) Howland; and her stepmother, Hazel Hulstedt Erlandson. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Alpha Gay Hayden of Galesburg; their children David and Christine Howland of East Galesburg, John and Marilla Howland of Colville, Washington, and Charles and Laura Howland of Galesburg; as well as 13 grandchildren, William Kirkpatrick of St. Louis, Carrie Nava of Galesburg, Nick (and Mimi) Vuong-Howland of Garden Grove, California, Josh (and Elizabeth) Howland of Stanwood, Iowa, Jennifer Howland (and Shawn Demick) of Iowa City, Iowa, Sarah (and Andre) Anderson of Juneau, Alaska, Rachel (and Michael) Huggins of Cleveland, Brandon Garris of Colville, John Dustin (and Lindsay) Howland of Galesburg, Rachel Howland of Daytona Beach, Florida, Jason Howland of Daytona Beach, Zack (and Brandy) Gabbert of Auburn, Indiana, and Samantha (and Dustin Franklin) Gabbert of Galesburg.
