Mildred Wells, 94 Retired physical education teacher; grandmother of two Mildred Wells died peacefully on July 19, 2020, in her home in Boynton Beach, Fla., at age 94. Mildred retired as a physical education teacher in the mid-80s. The schools that she taught at included I.S. 24, I.S. 27 and P.S. 45 on Staten Island, N.Y. Following her retirement, Mildred volunteered to provide help to victims of rape. She was a graduate of State Teachers College at New Paltz (now part of SUNY) and had a master's degree from Richmond College (now the College of Staten Island). Mildred married Ira, the love of her life, 10 weeks after they met on a blind date. She was widowed in 2019, when Ira died a few months before what would have been their 70th anniversary. Ira was a history teacher at Curtis H.S. on Staten Island. Ira and Mildred took advantage of their retirement years to travel extensively, always hitting the ground running so as not to miss a thing. Mildred was also an avid bridge player, continuing to pursue her passion even into advanced age. Mildred and Ira moved to Florida in 2015. Those who had the privilege to know Mildred will always remember her intelligence, warmth, refinement, devotion to family, and fun-loving sense of adventure. She will also be missed by her many animal friends. Every kitty and dog within miles knew to climb into her lap, to bask in unconditional love. Mildred is survived by daughter, Helene Wells (Steve) Hoffman of Boynton Beach, and Wall, N.J.; son, Andrew (Melanie) Wells of Manhattan, N.Y., and Kent, N.Y.; and granddaughters, Justine Wells and Georgina Wells, both of Brooklyn, N.Y. In addition to Ira, Mildred was predeceased by sisters, Ruth (Moe) Stearin and Jo (Kermit) Wolfson; brother, Edward Katz, and parents, Jacob and Anna Katz.
