Barbara Coffey, 87 She worked at Dean Witter Reynolds and was an avid traveler Barbara Coffey died on July 8, 2020, at Staten Island University-North Hospital after a brief and sudden illness. She was 87. Private funeral services will be held this weekend at Hanley Funeral Home in New Dorp. Barbara Connolly was born in Brooklyn, and her family moved to Staten Island when she was a young girl. She attended parochial schools in Dongan Hills and Westerleigh before graduating from Notre Dame Academy in 1951. She attended the Katharine Gibbs School and worked as a secretary for various businesses in New York before marrying Thomas Coffey, a public school teacher on Staten Island, in 1957. She returned to work, first at Port Richmond High School and then at Wagner College, before getting a job in Manhattan at Dean Witter Reynolds. In the 1980s and early 1990s she was the Secretary to the General Counsel at Dean Witter Reynolds, which merged with Morgan Stanley while she worked there, causing her many late nights. An avid traveler, Barbara made numerous trips to Europe and around the United States with her husband before he died in 2013. For many years they also enjoyed weekslong vacations on Cape Cod that became annual family reunions. Barbara is survived by her four children, Thomas, Elizabeth, Eileen and Andrew; five grandchildren; her sister, Mary Ann O'Connor of Barnegat, N.J.; and her brother Kenneth, of Voorheesville, N.Y. Her brother Thomas predeceased her. Barbara enjoyed her volunteer work for Meals on Wheels and the New Dorp branch of the New York Public Library. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to either organization. Hanley Funeral Home 60 New Dorp Lane Staten Island, NY 10306 (718) 351-1800
