George L. Engel
George L. Engel, 87, passed away on June 5, 2020 in Gainesville, FL. He was born in Detroit, MI, but considered Cleveland his home, having lived there nearly 50 years. George was predeceased by his son, Michael, and wife, Shirley. He was known as an advocate and facilitator of equal housing, developing subsidized buildings for low and moderate-income, elderly, and disabled residents in the metropolitan Cleveland area. From 1988-1994 he served as the regional manager for the US Dept of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). He is survived by his daughter Alexis (Sandy) Engel Levy, son-in-law Charles Levy and granddaughters Michala and Eliza Levy and leaves behind many friends and associates who admired his sharp intellect, forthright nature, and great sense of humor. He will be greatly missed. The family asks that in lieu of gifts a donation be made to the ACLU or Cleveland Orchestra.
