In memory of
Helen Cohan
It is with great sadness, that the family of Helen E. (Prystowski) Cohan, announce her passing on April 13, 2020 from COVID-19 complications. Born in Westfield, MA on November 10, 1921, a beloved daughter of the late Frank and Stephania (Bryl) Prystowski. Helen graduated from Westfield vocational school’s nursing program of which she was very proud. Before starting her family, she worked at Mass Mutual and Noble Hospital. Helen was very active in AA and counseled many individuals whom, to this day, are very appreciative of her understanding and patient efforts. A loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother, who showered her family with love and affection, which was returned to her a thousandfold. She was a very nurturing, warm person, who never had a critical word for anyone. She would always tell her family to “just have fun”. Helen was especially proud of her Polish heritage and catholic faith. She enjoyed her scratch tickets, dancing the polka and making her delicious zucchini bread, which she gladly distributed to family and friends. Mom loved playing basketball for Westfield Vocational High, earning a “W” patch for excelling in varsity. You would also find her at the public library many times a week, as she had an insatiable love of reading. Helen was a very energetic lady who would go out of her way to help anyone. Her quick wit and sincere personality, made her a pleasure to be around. Helen loved her family above all, and made that fact known, each and every day. She leaves to cherish her memory, her five children, John Prystowski (Betty) of Florence, MA, Lana Johnson (Fred) of Springfield, MA, Deborah Abrams (Rob) of Killingworth CT, Todd Cohan of Springfield, MA and Dori Cohan (Craig) of E. Windsor, CT, two step children, Deane of Colorado and Lynn of Hawaii. A nephew Dennis Yefko (Betti) of Westfield, MA. Besides her parents, Helen was pre-deceased by her former husband, Dr. L. Lester Cohan, a brother Chester Prystowski and sisters Stacia Yefko and Nellie Prystowski. Helen also leaves a sister Monica Prystowski of Westfield, MA along with her grandchildren, John, James, Tara, Kayla, Alexi, and her great grandchildren, Joshua, Jacob, Maggie, Ryan and Ava. All services are private, donations may be made in Helen’s memory to Holy Trinity Church, 335 Elm St. Westfield, MA 01085 or to AA of Western Mass or the MA/NH Chapter of Alzheimer’s. www.firtionadams.com
