RALPH VACHAL February 19, 1923 ˜ June 19, 2020 Ralph Vachal, 97, passed away June 19, 2020 at his Proebstel/Livingston, WA area home, the same property where he was born. Ralph was born February 19, 1923, the youngest child of James and Stella (Binder) Vachal. He graduated from Union High School in 1941. After school, Ralph enlisted in the Navy, and was a World War II veteran. He served aboard the USS Douglas Fox, and was on board when the ship was hit by a kamikaze May 5, 1945. He married Dorothy Darlene Davis on January 31, 1947. They spent nearly the entirety of their 65-year marriage on the family farm, raising three children. Dorothy passed away on March 22, 2012. Ralph farmed his entire life. Dairy cows and laying hens in the early years with his father, and later raising cattle and fryer chickens. In addition to farming, he had a share of and worked at the Linnton Mill and drove truck for the Hockinson Co-op. He and Dorothy also owned and operated the country store in Proebstel for a time. Ralph was a member of the Elks, the Western Czech Fraternal Organization, and a 55-year member of the Washington Grange #82. He had many friends, and long enjoyed hunting and fishing, even into old age. Ralph continued living at home, and was active on the farm well into his 90’s. In his later years, he enjoyed motoring the farm on an ATV. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him. Ralph is survived by his children and their spouses: Diana and James Harrison, Dean and Pauly Vachal and Don Vachal; grandchildren and spouses: Vanessa and Brian Viles, Bradley Vachal and Deborah Gumm, Christopher Vachal and Colleen Allen (unmarried), and Ashley Vachal; and great-grandchildren: Avery and Blake Viles and Everett Vachal. He was preceded in death by his wife; his daughter-in-law, Janet (Dinihanian) Vachal; and his siblings: Ted, Ethel Snyder and Alice Snider. The family would like to thank Marge, Sue, Roxy, Heather, Joylyn, and Visiting Angels, the loving caretakers, for making Ralph’s last days and months as comfortable as possible.
