In memory of
James O. Bower
James O. Bower, age 78, of Mechanicsburg, passed away on Friday, June 26, 2020 at Messiah Village. Born May 12, 1942 in West Fairview, he was the son of the late Ruth L. (Harne) and John A. Bower, Sr. Jim's first passion was spreading the word of God by word and deed. He became a Christian at the age of 17. He studied and taught the word of God discipling countless men and women on their life's journey. In whatever he did he gave it his all whether it was working physically or behind a desk. His Insurance Agency James O. Bower Insurance, Inc. is a tribute to his hard work and determination. The business has been the cornerstone of his family and employs all five of his children and several of his grandchildren and will continue to carry on his legacy of hard work and Christian values. Jim has been a faithful servant to his church and his community over the years working on boards of directors at various organizations such as Boy Scouts, Indian Guides, Peace Church, Grace Brethren Retreat Center, Hope Grace Brethren Church, Melrose Gardens Grace Brethren Church and the Eastern District of Grace Brethren Churches. He worked for many years as a Gideon distributing Bibles to people all over the world and in prisons in our area. He knew the word of God was the most important way to spread the Good news to the world. Jim was an avid golfer, fisherman and hunter along with his good friends, brother, children and grandchildren he spent many wonderful times in the outdoors camping, hiking and hunting. Travel was another passion of Jim's. He and Edie extensively traveled the world for as long as he was able. One of his favorite trips was an African Picture Safari with his oldest son. Jim and Edie spent several winters in Melbourne Beach, Florida where they had many friends in and around the area. The highlight of Jim's life was his marriage to Edie and their family. His wisdom, strength, and love will live on through them as will the many stories they remember and share about him. To know him was to love him and he touched so many lives. Jim is survived by his loving wife, Edith M. (Griffiths) Bower; five children, Jamie L. Stetson and husband William of Tolland, CT, James O. Bower, Jr. and wife Karen of Harrisburg, Kelly S. Bower of Mechanicsburg, Bradley A. Bower and wife Angela of New Cumberland and Lori K. Heenan and husband Jimmy of Mechanicsburg; two brothers Joseph F. Bower of Marysville and Jerry A. Bower and wife Gloria or Etters; three sisters, Sharon Weiglein of Shelton, WA, Iren Swartz and husband Barry of Enola and Dorothy Baker and husband Allen of West Fairview; and his eleven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, also numerous beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother John A. Bower, Jr. We would like to extend our appreciation and love to the kind wonderful staff of Messiah Lifeways for giving the most wonderful care to our husband and father in his last days.
