In memory of
Barbara Gorman
Barbara Gorman, 84 Native Islander, her joy was Sunday dinners & holidays with family With a heavy heart, the family of Barbara Gorman (nee Buckley) announces her passing on Sunday, June 21, 2020. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, James Gorman. Barbara was born in West Brighton on May 2, 1936, graduated from Curtis High School and worked as a secretary for the International Nickel Co. for five years. She left the work force to be a full-time homemaker, until 1975. Upon returning to work, Barbara finished her career where she started at International Nickel Co.. Barbara liked to read mystery books, solve crossword puzzles and work on her needlepoint. Her greatest joy was being with her family for Sunday dinners and holiday gatherings along with cruises and trips to Las Vegas with the love of her life, Jim. Barbara was known for her very big heart, welcoming family members who were sick into her home and taking care of them. This was exemplified after September 11th when she and Jim moved in and took care of their daughter Nancy and her two young sons for six months. Surviving are her children, Diane Svenningsen and her husband, Ken, of Mountain Lakes, NJ; Nancy Kumpel of Cornwall on the Hudson, NY; James Gorman and his wife, Amy Beth of Staten Island, NY, and seven grandchildren, Michael, Mark, Lauren, Greg, Carl, Kelly and Megan. Many broken hearts are left with Barbara's passing and even though she will be sorely missed, it lightens our hearts to think of her and dad dancing together in each other's arms up in heaven. She is finally where she wants to be, back with her Jim. A gathering of family and friends will take place on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Harmon Funeral Home, 571 Forest Ave., Staten Island, NY 10310. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Holy Family Church, 366 Watchogue Road, Staten Island, NY 10314. Interment will follow at St. Peter's Cemetery.
