Shirley Mae Korpela
Shirley Mae Korpela May 1, 1930 - June 7, 2020 Shirley Mae (Hillard) Korpela, peacefully passed away June 7, 2020 in Milwaukie, Ore. She was born May 1, 1930 in Flint, Mich. Shirley graduated Astoria High in 1948 and the University of Oregon in 1952. She loved to learn and was very social. Shirley was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority at the U of O and belonged to many organizations. On Sept. 15, 1951, Shirley married her high school sweetheart William Korpela, her "Billy." They cherished their 59 years of marriage and loved each other dearly. They enjoyed golfing and road tripping to visit family in Florida. Shirley and Bill founded the family's annual beach trip and shared many happy memories at the Oregon Coast. Shirley worked as an educator and speech and hearing clinician. She taught in many school districts throughout her career and retired in 1991 to spend time with her grandchildren. Shirley was an avid reader of mystery novels and loved sitting on her porch swing in the sun. She was filled with kindness, humor, courage, honesty, and warmth. She also had a quick wit and spunky personality! Shirley is survived by her daughters, Linda (David) Vessey and Mary (David) Aschenbrenner; grandchildren, Rob (Edna) Vessey and Amy Aschenbrenner; great-grandchildren, Ryder, Jaxson, Sebastian Vessey, and Celynez and Aryana Gomez. Shirley will be interred with her husband 1st Lt. William Korpela in Willamette National Cemetery.
