In memory of
Robert Towry
12/19/46 - 06/16/20 Robert Murphy Towry, of Irondale, Alabama, passed away from natural causes on June 16, 2020. He attended Woodrow Wilson Elementary School and was a graduate of Ensley High School. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree In Mineral Engineering from the University of Alabama, before joining the United States Air Force. Robert was awarded the American Spirit Honor Medal during Basic Training and honorably completed his tour of duty at Eglin Air Force Base. Robert served as the Director of Engineering and Safety in the underground and surface mining industries. He was an accomplished draftsman, land surveyor and general contractor, forming Robert M. Towry Construction Services. Robert was the "go to" engineer in his professional community. In fact, his touch on his beloved Alabama is extensive. Robert was also a talented guitarist and song writer, often "sitting in" with local performing bands. His artistic endeavors included water colors and oil painting. He was passionate about his southern heritage and also enjoyed the study of World War II, in which his father, Hollis Towry, served as a Tank Commander at the Battle of the Bulge. Robert often spoke of his pride in his father's military service, and expressed gratitude and support of U.S. veterans throughout his life. Robert was known for his wry sense of humor and quick wit. Most who knew him have a story to tell about an amusing experience with Robert. His favorite comic strip was "Far Side" and he loved the "Crimson Tide". Robert grew up in Bush Hills, attending the Fourth Avenue West Church of Christ. Robert is survived by his son, Robert Gabriel Towry of Jensen Beach, Florida; his granddaughter, Sophia Towry; his sister, Virginia Towry Wistuk of Birmingham; his nephew, Michael Wistuk, and his great-niece, Greta Wistuk. He is pre-deceased by his father, Hollis M. Towry, and his mother, Virginia Ray Towry. Robert had a love of travel stemming from his childhood. Robert and his sister, Ginny, travelled extensively with their parents on family vacations, stopping to read every historical marker along the way. Toward the end of his life Robert enjoyed close, personal time with his son, Gabe, and granddaughter, Sophie, exploring Alabama, specifically the Talledega National Forest and Mount Cheaha, allowing him to, once again, experience his love of the open road. The date and location of Robert's "Celebration of Life" service will be announced in the near future.
