Robert Eck Jr., 63 Former Islander Robert (Bobby) Eck Jr., 63, passed away July 3, 2019, at Estelle's House Hospice following a head trauma injury suffered at home. Born and raised in Staten Island, Robert was the son of the late Margaret and Robert Eck. He was a graduate of Susan E. Wagner High School and also attended the former Richmond College. He was employed for several years by International Shipholding Corporation. In 1982 Robert became a Merchant Marine and worked as a seaman for several freight forwarders. Following his return from sea, Robert worked for several Island restaurants before retiring to Key West, Fla., in 1995. In 2004 Robert settled in his country cabin in Ocala National Forest, Ocala, Fla. During his time in Ocala, he became known for his love of animals. He began taking in pets from people who could no longer take care of them. Many people would return and visit their pets in his home. One of Robert's favorite pastimes was watching classic Hollywood movies of the 1930's and 1940's. Robert is survived by his partner of 27 years, Michael Retta of Ocala, Fla.; sisters, Elizabeth Bonici (Peter Bonici), Tara Jamison (John Herbert), Marlene Malanga (Rich Bernier); a brother, Kerry Eck (Julio Quintero); nephews, Kevin Jamison, Peter Bonici, and his niece, Erika Volpe. A private memorial service was held in January.
