Richard Jon 'Skip' Martinsen, 73 January 21, 1947 - April 23, 2020 Richard "Skip" Martinsen, 73, a longtime Staten Island, N.Y., family, passed away on April 23, 2020, at his home in Houston, Texas. Skip Martinsen was born on Jan. 21, 1947, at Staten Island Hospital to Martin and Ann Martinsen, and grew up with his brother Tom and sister Anne on Little Clove Road, and his cousin Janet in Madison, N.J. He graduated from Public School 29 and Port Richmond High School, where he played Varsity Basketball and Baseball. He attended and graduated from Wagner College in 1968. During his college years he was a staff writer for the Staten Island Advance, covering many sporting events. Upon graduation from college, Skip married Gail Terkelsen of Constant Ave., Staten Island, on Nov. 23, 1968 at Zion Lutheran Church on Staten Island. Gail was a graduate of Port Richmond High School and later became a nurse. Skip enlisted in the US Army during the Vietnam war, and after training was sent to South Vietnam to join the 25th Infantry Division in Cu Chi. Upon his return to the States, Skip and Gail moved to Houston, Texas with their son Paul to accept a teaching position at Houston Community College, and later retired from the College as a senior Administrator and remained in Houston. Throughout his life, Skip enjoyed studying history, following sports, and writing. Over the final years of his life he had been working on an historical account of the Martinsen family history and immigration from Norway to the United States. Skip is survived by his wife, Gail, son, Paul, and three grandchildren, Alyssa, Brynn, and Grace. Funeral services will be held in Houston, when COVID-19 travel restrictions are lifted, with the Veterans Administration performing the burial ceremony.
