John Joseph O'Connor, 91 Former sanitation administrator; served in Korean War John Joseph O'Connor, 91, of Staten Island, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, June 19, 2020. Viewing is at Hanley Funeral Home, Sunday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Mass is Monday at St. Christopher's Church, 10 a.m., followed by burial at Moravian Cemetery. He was born April 4, 1929, in Manhattan, N.Y., John is survived by his children, John, Dennis, Gregory, Patrick, and Frank; daughters-in-law, Diane, Mina, Lorraine, Emily, and Kathy; 10 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. He was also predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Theresa O'Connor (nee Levato); his son, Thomas, and daughter-in-law, Loretta. After graduating New Dorp High School, John attended Wagner College. He served in the Korean War from 1951 to 1952. He later worked for sanitation as an administrator for 34 years. John volunteered at Seaview Hospital for 35 years transporting the sick to Mass and doing the readings. He lectured at St. Christopher/St. Margaret Mary Parish for over 35 years. He also enjoyed bowling and baseball. He was a member of the Korean War Veteran's Club. John always had a smile on his face and was the leader of the family. He was a man of great faith and compassion, a big sports fan, he was also proud of his service for his country. John loved family vacations with his children to the Poconos and the Catskills, he loved cruising with his whole family. He spent his 50th anniversary with his wife in Italy and also enjoyed traveling to Ireland. John was the greatest man we ever knew and our role model we will miss him.
