Anthony Thompson "Tony" Mathews
Anthony "Tony" Thompson Mathews Jr. 56 of Ponce de Leon, FL. Went home to be with his lord and savior on June 5, 2020. He was born in Jacksonville, FL on August 7th, 1963 to Anthony T. Mathews and Brenda Session Mathews. He grew up as a son of a Navy man where he eventually settled down in Santa Rosa Beach, FL where he graduated from Freeport High School in 1981. On April 16th 1988 he married his best friend and the love of his life Sherrie Pittman Mathews. Anyone who knew them or met them could tell that they had a very special bond and a love for each other that very few couples are lucky enough to experience. They had true love. Tony loved Jesus, spending time with his family, watching NASCAR and football (ROLL TIDE), and FOX news. But, most of all he loved being on the water and in Rock Hill with is Bride. Tony was a merchant mariner who started his long career as a deck hand on charter fishing boats sailing out of Destin, FL. He eventually earned his commercial captains license. Tony was the epitome of a self-made man in American tradition. Some of Tony's accomplishments included master chief in the USA and Western Australia, United States Coast Guard Examiner, First Class Marine Licensed Pilot for USA and Western Australia, Advanced Licensed Oil and Chemical Unlimited Tanker of Cargo. He will live on through his children Elizabeth (Jeffrey) Brooks, Schuyler Mathews, his three grandsons Axl, Crew, and Nash Brooks. He is survived by his wife, Sherrie Pittman Mathews of 32 years. His father Anthony T. Mathews Sr. Brothers, Patrick (Susannah) Mathews, Mark (Yubeiri) Bacon, Father and Mother in law: Harry and Joyce Pittman. Sister in laws; Susan (Anthony) Farinella, Julie (Brenton) Holley, and Amy Perez. Several nieces and nephews, three great-nieces and many other loved ones, dear friends, and all who sailed with him, his ship mates. He is preceded in death by his mother, Brenda Bacon. Memorial Services for Captain Tony Mathews will be held on Saturday June 20th, 2020 at 2:00 pm at First Baptist Church of Callahan. 45040 Green Avenue, Callahan, FL. 32011 with Dr, Lynn Hyatt presiding. Following a celebration of life at Jeffrey and Elizabeth's home.
