Dominick C. Dente
Dominick C. Dente, 96 WWII Navy Veteran, native Staten Islander, beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Dominick C. Dente, 96, passed away peacefully on May 27, 2020 at his home. He was born on May 14, 1924 on Fillmore Street and raised in New Brighton. Mr. Dente was a lifelong Staten Island resident and a graduate of McKee Vocational High School. He entered the Navy in 1942 and proudly served his country for three years as a sonar technician on the USS Converse (DD-509), a Fletcher-class destroyer. During that time, the USS Converse was stationed in the South Pacific. They saw a lot of action and fought many battles. The ship was awarded The Presidential Unit Citation and eleven Battle Stars. Upon his discharge in 1945, he returned to Staten Island and worked in the family business as a butcher at Henderson Meat Market and then concluded his career with ShopRite Supermarkets. Mr. Dente was a cherished husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He married his beloved wife, Ann Dente (née Napolitano) of West Brighton, in 1947. Together they raised three devoted children, Joseph, Jeffrey, and Susan. In 1990, after 43 years of marriage, Ann sadly passed away. Mr. Dente was an avid sports fan. His two favorite teams were the New York Mets and New York Giants. He was honored by both teams for his WWII service. He loved to dance, sing and engage in conversation with everyone. He had a unique way of putting a smile on the faces of friends, family and those he just met. Above all else, he valued his family. His great-grandchildren were the joy of his life. Mr. Dente is survived by his loving children - sons, Joseph Dente and Jeffrey Dente; daughter, Susan Gioia; and his six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren with one expected in July. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Matthew Funeral Home with a graveside ceremony to follow at St. Peter's Cemetery, where Dominick will be buried with his wife. Due to the current pandemic, funeral services are private. A Memorial Mass to celebrate Dominick's life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Dominick's memory can be made to The American Legion Granito-Smith Post 1296, c/o Charles Navarino, Commander at 125 Alter Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10304. Dominick was a member and avid supporter of The American Legion. Matthew Funeral Home 2508 Victory Boulevard Staten Island, N.Y. 10314 (718) 761-5544
