He was born June 3, 1930 to Robert Trethewey and Ruth Louise (Sherwood) Southgate in Peoria, Illinois, where the young couple had found work during the Great Depression. He grew up in Ypsilanti where his father would open a photography studio, and where his mother's family lived. After serving two years in the army during the Korean War, he attended Eastern Michigan University, where he received his Bachelors in education and Masters in guidance and counseling.
