In memory of
Mary (Wright) Gaskin
Mary Wright Gaskin of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, went home to be with Jesus on May 2, 2020 and is dancing with the angels with her beloved husband Bo. She passed away peacefully at the age of 95 in her current residence at Somerby Senior Living Community in Santa Rosa Beach. She was born on November 8, 1924, in Greenwood Springs, Mississippi, to Daniel Webster Wright and Bertha Leona Wright. Her father was a timber man and owned a sawmill. The family lived on a farm and lived off the land raising chickens, pigs, cows, and growing beans, cucumbers, squash, okra, greens, etc. Her mother died when she was 11, and she assumed the responsibility of helping rear her sister and brother. This, in addition to the challenges of farm life, instilled in Mary the value of hard work which prepared her for future success. At age 15, Mary moved to the "big city" (Birmingham) using money saved from selling eggs. She enrolled in beauty school, then worked in that profession until eventually she owned a very successful business – Key Circle Beauty Salon. The love of her life was her husband Bo Gaskin. They married in 1978 and moved to Santa Rosa Beach. Mary and Bo traveled extensively and came to love Costa Rica so much that they almost moved there. They dearly loved observing "bull bat hour" (5:00)--either sitting by their pool or on their screened in porch or cruising Choctawhatchee Bay on their pontoon boat watching the sunset. They also enjoyed going to their home away from home – a family farm in Laurel Hill, Florida. They reconnected with the land there by having a huge garden where they grew fruits and vegetables. There is a beautiful, shady pecan orchard on the property. They hand planted pine seedlings over many acres and grew a pine plantation. They restored a 100+-year-old shack and enjoyed the peace and quiet afforded to them there. After Bo's death, Mary formally found Jesus in a big way at Faith Assembly Christian Church in Miramar Beach, Florida. She especially enjoyed seeing Preacher Toy dance there! Mary was predeceased by her husband George D. "Bo" Gaskin, her sister Mildred Kathleen Hayes (Tom), and her brother Willard Wooten Wright (Alma). She is survived by her sister-in-law Alma Wright of Chattanooga, Tennessee, stepson George D. "Dinks" Gaskin Jr. (Susan) and their children Sarah Allen Gaskin Pitts (Jamison), George D. Gaskin III (Mattie) and her great-granddaughter Loula Evelyn Gaskin, all of Birmingham, Alabama, and stepdaughter Lee Allen Jefcoats (David) of Laurel, Mississippi. Also, neice Cathy Jenora Parker of Springville, Alabama, nephew Willard Kipling Wright (BJ) of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and niece Kimberly Denise Lyell (David) of Ooletwah, Tenneesee, along with many great nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank the staff at Somerby and Emerald Coast Hospice for their care for Mary over the last few months. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic with its restrictions, the family will hold a celebration of life at Faith Assembly at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation can be made to Faith Assembly Christian Church, 306 South Geronimo Street, Miramar Beach, Florida 32550.
