Shirley Ezell McCulloh
McCULLOH, Shirley Ezell (1934 - 2020) After a long illness, Shirley Eran Ezell McCulloh died peacefully at her home in Birmingham, Alabama on Wednesday, April 1, 2020. She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-five years, James Calvin McCulloh, Jr. (1931-2019), and her brother, Levon Vertie Ezell (1930-2020) of Dallas Texas. Shirley was born January 4, 1934 in Pascagoula, Mississippi, the daughter of Eran Grant (1909-1935) and Vertie Levon Ezell (1907-1968). Shirley McCulloh is survived by her children Mark Richard McCulloh, Catherine Christine McCulloh Griffin, Cole Calvin McCulloh, her grandsons Cadwallader Grant McCulloh (Raeane) of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Danner Lee McCulloh of Raleigh, and by her brother-in-law Jack Reid Armistead (Carole) and his family. Her great-grandchild is Henry Hathaway McCulloh, the son of Cadwallader and Raeane. She is also survived by her cherished cousin Charlotte Lane Dominick. Besides her devotion to her family, Shirley's enduring love was for the dramatic artsas a young woman she travelled alone to Massachusetts in 1951 and acted in summer stock on Cape Cod, and throughout her adult life she performed in, or directed, many theatrical productions. She orchestrated numerous Christmas pageants at St. Mark United Methodist Church in Vestavia Hills where she was a long-time member. She was an avid participant in Birmingham's Speech Arts Club, the Savants Literary Club, and the "Rosebuds" birthday group. Mia Merchant was her devoted companion and caregiver during the final years, and tended to her care, with the support of many more to whom the family owes a debt of deepest gratitude. A gathering for family and friends will be held at a time appropriate to the celebratory remembrance of her life. Charitable contributions may be made in her name to Birmingham-Southern College, the Alabama Humanities Foundation, and the Virginia Samford Theater.
