The family of Govan Anthony Martin, Jr., sadly announce that Govan, or "Marty," as he was affectionately called, passed away at home on Friday, March 27, 2020, surrounded by his family. Govan, 77, of Harrisburg, PA, son of the late Govan Anthony Martin, Sr., and Pauline Boea Martin, was born on February 19, 1943, in Pittsburgh, PA. Govan is preceded in death by his son, Michael, in 1980. He is survived by his current wife, Anna Marie Panza Martin, his sons, Govan and Shawn, his daughter Ashley, his son-in-law David, and granddaughter, Sophia. Govan is also survived by his younger brother Anthony Martin of Pittsburgh, PA. Govan graduated from Westinghouse High School in 1961 and worked as a photographic assistant at Westinghouse Research while also working for his father in the family catering business. In 1971, he carried out his professional lifetime goal and became a proud member of the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP). He quickly moved up through the ranks and became a Sergeant in 1977. He worked at Troop S, Troop T, Records and Identification Unit, and worked at the PSP Academy for 14 years, and was also in the first class of the Member Assistance Program. He also graduated from the FBI National Academy in June 1986. Govan retired from the PSP in 1998, and while immensely enjoying his career with the PSP, he always considered that his family was his greatest achievement. Govan loved photography, fishing, music, cooking, and traveling with his family on many trips to Disney World. He belonged to the Progress Fire Company Home Association and the American Legion Post 730 where he enjoyed spending time with old and new friends. Govan was also a devout Catholic and belonged to St. Catherine Laboure Church in Harrisburg, PA. A private service and burial will take place on Thursday, April 2, 2020, at 12:00 pm. A memorial service will take place in the near future so that everyone can celebrate the life of Govan "Marty" Martin. Arrangements are being handled by Wiedeman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc.
