Dirkse, Roger Harry 4/27/1931 - 3/13/2020 Jacksonville, Florida On Friday March 13, 2020, Roger Harry Dirkse, a loving husband and father of four children, passed away in his home in Jacksonville, Florida at the age of 88. Roger was born April 27, 1931 in Holland, Michigan, to Cornelius and Marie (Kalkman) Dirkse. After graduating from Ann Arbor High School, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served four years attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. While stationed at Carswell Air Force Base in Ft. Worth Texas, he met and married Erma Jean Newland. They were married in the Fort Worth Bible Church on June 5, 1953. They then moved to Michigan where they raised their four children, Randy, Donna, Patti, and Barbara. Roger was a devout Christian and instilled his love of Christ within his family through his entire life. As a member of the Milan Baptist Church for 45 years, he was a leader in the Boys Brigade program for teenage boys, while also teaching adult Sunday school. Roger also spent his entire working career as a member of the Local 190 Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Union in Ann Arbor, Michigan. After retiring to Florida, he became a member of Fruit Cove Baptist Church of Jacksonville. Roger was an avid bicyclist until the age of 80, while also enjoying woodworking and carpentry. Along with his loving wife, Erma, he was attended to by Community Hospice for the last year of his life. Roger is preceded in death by his parents, Marie and Neil, and his three brothers, Cornell, Ernie, and Jack Dirkse. He is survived by his wife, Erma Jean (Newland) Dirkse; 2 sisters, Sandra Cline and Norma Jean Pope; 2 sister-in-laws, Beverly Dirkse and Dixie Dirkse; 4 children, Randall H. Dirkse (Brenda), Donna D. Vandervelde, Barbara J. Dirkse, and Patti D. Pijut (Lawrence); 6 grandchildren, Jennifer R. Dirkse, Michelle L. Bishop, Adam J. Pijut, R. Alek Vandervelde, Alexandra M. Pijut, Nicolette J. Vandervelde; one great- granddaughter, Josie R. Jones; as well as many nieces and nephews. Roger was buried on Monday March 23, 2020 at the Jacksonville National Cemetery.
