Jose Alberto Carloto
Jose Alberto Carloto Owned Carloto's Pastry Shop in Elizabeth; lived life to the fullest Jose Alberto Carloto, just six days after his 98th birthday, passed away peacefully of natural causes on Feb. 10, 2020, in Boulder, Colo., where he moved in 2016 to be near his only son. He was surrounded by his immediate family, including wife, Arminda and son, Joe (Ze Manel), daughter-in-law, both granddaughters and his great-granddaughter. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend the funeral on Tuesday, Feb. 18, from the August F. Schmidt Memorial Funeral Home, 139 Westfield Ave., Elizabeth, N.J. Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Fatima R.C. Church, Elizabeth at 9 a.m. Entombment Rosedale Cemetery. Visiting Monday 4 to 8 p.m. Born on Feb. 4, 1922, in Acores, Celorico da Beira, Portugal, Jose Alberto married his beloved wife, Arminda da Conceicao Ramos on Oct. 2, 1954, in Fatima, Portugal. He began visiting the United States in the late 1960s, and later made the permanent move with his wife, setting roots in Elizabeth, close to his sister Clara and other family. Known affectionately as "Betinho," he and his wife founded Carloto's Pastry Shop in Elizabeth in 1983, which they owned and managed until their retirement in 2014 (he was 94 years old). It still endures under the ownership of his former employees. "Carloto's" was the last in a long list of successful businesses Betinho had established during his lifetime, both in Portugal and in the United States. He established himself as an active member of the community, was the recipient of many awards, participated in the Portugal Day Parade, had many friends and was an ardent supporter of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Elizabeth. Gregarious and fun-loving, one of his favorite extra-curricular activities was a Friday Lunch Group (Grupo Chave). Dubbed by the Group as an Investment Group, his son affectionately teased that the only thing they invested in was in excellent restaurants. Betinho's greatest qualities were his kindness and generosity, zest for life and love for his family. While he missed his own goal of reaching 100 years, he lived life to its fullest. He is survived by his wife, Arminda, son, Joe, daughter-in-law, Kim, granddaughters, Samantha (husband Ozzy) and Megan, and his six-year-old granddaughter, Adriana. In lieu of flowers, the Carloto Family requests that donations be made to Our Lady of Fatima Church in Elizabeth, 403 Spring St., Elizabeth, NJ 07201 to support their many contributions to the community.
