Zeraline Dorthea Smith Verner
Zeraline Dorthea Smith Verner Beloved matriarch; active in South Orange civic affairs Zeraline Dorthea Smith Verner, 94, a longtime resident of South Orange, N.J., and member of St. James AME Church in Newark, N.J., made her transition on Sunday, Feb. 9, 2020. Mrs. Verner, who was born in Mound Bayou, Miss., was the loving wife of the late Dr. Edward Walter Verner, a revered long-time Newark physician and minister. She was a graduate of Hampton University in Hampton, Va. Following graduation, Mrs. Verner returned to Mississippi to teach. She eventually moved to New Jersey with her growing family. Mrs. Verner was a missionary and former Sunday school teacher at St. James. She was also active in civic affairs in her home town of South Orange, where she was a founding member of the South Orange Civic Organization. The beloved matriarch is survived by her seven children: Rev. Estelle, Dr. Edwina, Gwen, Marilyn (Dan), Edward Jr., Patrice, Beth (Ron); 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. In addition to her biological family she has been the surrogate mother, grandmother and great-grandmother to countless many who gravitated to her for her sweet boundless loving spirit. Her warm smile and southern drawl provided a perfect living example of love and graciousness. Her stories about growing up in Mound Bayou connect us to our ancestral past and offer lessons of struggle, survival and triumph that will be remembered through the generations. We have all been blessed to have been surrounded by her love. Services will be held at St. James AME Church in Newark on Saturday, Feb. 15 with viewing from 8 to 10 a.m. and services beginning at 10 a.m. Arrangements are entrusted to the Whigham Funeral Home in Newark.
