James George Filush
Filush, James George age 96, died peacefully at his home on January 24, 2020. He was the third of four children born to the late Michael & Anna Filush of St. Joseph, MI. His sister, Josephine Garrison, of St. Joseph, MI survives him. James graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1942, entered the Navy, and participated in the invasion of Iwo Jima as a ship to shore radioman. After the war, James embarked on a career centered on the industrial application of paints and stains - principally at Whirlpool Corporation and Guardsman Paint & Chemicals. While working at Whirlpool, in 1947, James met and married the love of his life, Agatha Valacak, with whom he raised seven children. Agatha passed from this life in August of 2014 - they had been happily married for over 67 years. After James retired, he worked for several years at two jobs from which he got great satisfaction: St. Vincent DePaul Society in Grand Rapids, and as custodian for St. Pius X Parish in Grandville. James is survived by his children: James M. Filush (MaryAnn) of Auburn, AL; Sandra Filush of Grandville, MI; Jerold Filush (Monica) of Agana, Guam; Richard Filush (Mindy) of Cedar Springs, MI; John Filush (Mary) of Hudsonville, MI; Lori Nessner (David) of Seven Lakes, NC; and Debi Schueler (James) of St. Louis, MO. James is also survived by 23 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Visitation with the family will be held from 2 - 4 pm and 6 - 8 pm on Sunday, February 23, 2020 at Cook Funeral Home (West building), 4235 Prairie St. SW, Grandville, MI with a Vigil / Rosary beginning at 7:30 pm. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 am on Monday, February 24, 2020 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 3937 Wilson Ave. SW, Grandville, MI 49418 with visitation starting at 9:30 am. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery. In honor of James, contributions may be made to St. Vincent DePaul, Grand Rapids, MI.
