Mary Josephine Garrett
Mary Josephine "Mary Jo" Lesner Garrett, age 67, was called to her heavenly home on Tuesday, January 21, 2020. She was a resilient fighter, who survived Hodgkins Lymphoma twice, breast cancer twice, and lung cancer. After numerous years of undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments, on January 21, 2020, she lost her battle to pulmonary edema and respiratory failure. Her parents were Stanley Raymond Lesner, Sr. and Montez Skipper Lesner. Mary Jo was born in Panama City, FL and was the oldest of three children. She graduated from Bay High School in 1970 and later studied business at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. In 2015, after 23 years, she retired from Singing River Health System in Pascagoula, MS. She was preceded in death by her parents, infant son, and high school sweetheart & beloved husband of 48 years, Clayton O. "Butch" Garrett Jr., retired BMC of USCG. She is survived by her two sons, Clayton (Brenda) Garrett, III and John (Jamie) Garrett; two beautiful granddaughters, whom she called her "grand divas," Anna and Kate; sister, Rebecca (Herbert) Cousin; brother, Ray (Staci) Lesner; and sisters-in-law, Donna (James) Pate and Teresa Conway; along with numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Butch's military career with the USCG gave him and Mary Jo the opportunity to live in numerous parts of the country including Grand Isle, LA; Fort Myers, FL; Kodiak, AK; and Galveston, TX. While stationed in Pascagoula, MS they fell in love with the area and the friends they made. They built their "Condo on the Creek" and called Moss Point, MS their home, where they raised their sons and lived for nearly 35 years. While in Moss Point, Mary Jo became an active and dedicated member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where she served as member of the choir, lector, and Eucharistic minister. In 2018, she moved to Cottonport, LA to be closer to her two grand divas and became a member of St. Mary's Assumption Catholic Church. Honorary pallbearers are Bill Massey, Butch Gager, Emery Elder, Jake Bernard, James Bernard, Rickey Livingston, and Robbie Goff. Serving as pallbearers are Al Bodden, Chris Butler, Jody Parker, Robbie Bernard, Scott Garrard, and Zachary Lesner. Services will be held on Monday, January 27, 2020 at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Martin Luther King Blvd., Moss Point, MS with the visitation from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 1:00 PM. Burial will be held at Barrancas National Cemetery, 1 Cemetery Rd., Pensacola, FL, on Tuesday, January 28, 2020 at 1:00 PM.
