Jerome Buford Hanks Jr.
Jerome Buford Hanks, Jr. went home to be with the Lord on January 16, 2020 at the age of 92. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Gail Roberts Hanks and his children Marsha Yates, (Charles), David Hanks, Karen York (Larry), Jerry Hanks, Sharon Rainey (Sam), Cinda Thompson (Frank), Wade Hammond (Kathy), and Alan Hammond (Francis), sisters, Nell Rainey and Virginia Gail Ragsdale, 15 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Jerome B. Hanks, Sr., mother, Effie Keen Hanks, and brothers, Coleman Hanks and Conrad Hanks. Jerome was a Mississippi State graduate. He also served in the U.S. Marine Corp during World War II. He later moved to Birmingham to begin his career at U.S. Steel in Fairfield. After retirement in 1983 he worked for the State of Al Rev Department until the age of 70. He was a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church in Hueytown. His favorite hobbies were ballroom dancing and Mississippi State sports of any kind. He loved football and was a very loyal fan of his alma mater. He enjoyed most of all playing Dirty Santa Claus every Christmas season with all of his children, grandchildren and many great grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. at McCalla Memorial Funeral Home on Monday, January 20, 2020 with a memorial service following at 1:00 p.m. Officiating the service is Pastor Frank Thompson from Childersburg and burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Bessemer, AL. The family would like to especially thank Encompass Health Hospice nurses who were a great support in his final days.
