In memory of
Mary J. "Mare" Whiteley
Mary J. Whiteley 'Mare' July, 14 1935 - Jan. 11, 2020 Mary Whiteley passed away peacefully at the home of her son, Eric, Jan. 11, 2020, surrounded by three generations of her family. The entire family is grateful for the incredible care provided by the Connected Home Health & Hospice team at the end of Mary's life. Mary was born July 14, 1935, in Seattle to Karl and Marion Heideman. She attended school in Seattle and graduated from St. Nicholas School in 1953. She attended the University of Oregon where she joined Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. At Oregon she met her first husband Ed Halberg. They married in 1955 in Seattle. Mary spent her early adulthood as a devoted mother and fanatical sports fan. Mary and Ed had four children, Kerri in 1956, Karl in 1957, Eric in 1962 and Ed in 1963. Mary lost her parents in a plane crash in 1966, and the family moved to Portland for business reasons in 1971. Mary made lifelong friends through the neighborhood, at Portland Golf Club and through her children. Mary and Ed separated in 1974 and she married Jim Whiteley in 1980. She continued to pursue her main interests in family and sports, adding travel to Hawaii, Arizona and Europe over the years. Nothing gave Mary greater pleasure than the grandchildren who began arriving in 1987. Erika, Brittany, Paige, Alicia, Nick, McKennen, Brad, Jenna and Kirsten gave her a reason to spoil the whole family with wonderful holidays and epic Christmases. She was delighted with the arrival of her three great-grandsons, Luke, Zeke and Zaia, and with the news that another great-grandchild will arrive next June. Mary, affectionately known by many as Mare, will be sadly missed but happily remembered by her children along with their spouses, Peter, Jill, Suzie and Pamela; her grandchildren; and great-grandchildren; and her wide circle of friends. A private cremation will take place. Donations, if desired, to St. Jude Medical Center. Please sign the online guest book at www.oregonlive.com/obits
