In memory of
Captain Alvern D. Christian
Captain Alvern D. Christian Captain Alvern D. Christian, USN Ret., passed into eternal life on January 5, 2020. Born September 22, 1934 in Janesville, Wisconsin, he was 85 years old. He was a graduate with honors of Milton College and the University of Wisconsin Law School. During his career in the Navy, he served in the Judge Advocate General Corps, specializing in Admiralty Law and was awarded the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct. Following his retirement, he pursued a life of volunteerism, serving as a mediator for the Better Business Bureau, a tour guide at the Living Desert, a docent at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, and a CASA volunteer. Al was an avid gardener and all his gardens thrived under his "green thumb" wherever he lived. He enjoyed traveling the world and enjoyed many special journeys with his wife, Julie and son, Jamie. He also served in various ministries in the Episcopal churches he attended, and especially treasured his participation in an outreach ministry to homeless farm workers in San Diego. He is survived by his wife, Julia W. Christian of Rancho Mirage, brother Arnold R. (Hannelore) Christian of Brandenburg, KY, sister Mary C. (Gary) Edens of Ft. Madison, IA and niece Emily C. (Jim) Jensen of Brandenburg, KY. He was preceded in death by his son, James W. Christian. We wish to express our great appreciation to Giovanni Romanini and Lawrence Ford, his compassionate caregivers, during the last months of his life. A memorial service will be held on Monday, February 10, 2020 at 1:30 pm at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in Palm Desert. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Living Desert or St. Margaret's Episcopal Church.
