John J. Dugan
John J. Dugan, 78 A native Staten Islander, beloved husband, father, and Pop-Pop John J. Dugan of Eltingville, Staten Island, N.Y., passed away peacefully on Jan. 12, 2020. John was the eldest child of John Joseph Dugan Sr. "Joe" and Rita Dugan. He was born in 1941 in Staten Island and attended St. Peter's Boys High School. John received his bachelor of arts degree in education from Manhattan College (go Jaspers!) and master's degree from Wagner College. During the summers he loved spending time at Lake Mohawk where he was a lifeguard. John was a devout Roman Catholic and loyal parishioner of St. Clare's Church in Great Kills for almost 50 years. He was a dedicated teacher, beginning his teaching career at Port Richmond HS and teaching at PS 14, PS 17 and PS 54 where he spent 26 years from the time it opened until the time he retired in 1997. He ran the after-school center at PS 54 where he coached hockey and created a stamp club so he could pass down his love of philately to a new generation. His passion was traveling with his family and visiting the places he taught about in social studies. He was proud to have explored all seven continents. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Carol Dugan, children, Sean Dugan of Manhattan, and Kara Detgen of Madison, N.J., and two grandsons, Brandon and Colin Detgen. He is also survived by two brothers, Tom Dugan and Kevin Dugan, sister-in-law, Mary Dugan, two nephews, Patrick Dugan and Tim Dugan and niece, Moira Dugan. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:45 a.m. on Friday at St. Clare Church. Interment to follow in Resurrection Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Inc., 28 Eltingville Blvd, Staten Island, New York.
