In memory of
Robert J. DellaPenna, age 86, died peacefully on January 3, 2020 surrounded by his family. He was born in Holyoke, MA. on May 13, 1933 to the late Aurora DeLage and Philip Della Penna. Robert attended Sacred Heart School and Holyoke Trade High School in his beloved city. Robert’s 38-year long military career started in high school where he joined the Massachusetts National Guard Co. E 104th Infantry Holyoke, MA until 1950, went on to serve United States Air Force and was re-called for duty in 1961 to aid in the Berlin crisis. During his service with the Massachusetts Air National Guard, (1958-1988) he served as an aircraft mechanic, a crew chief on fighter aircraft and flight engineer on the support aircraft assigned to Barnes Airport (Westfield, MA) and Bradley Field (Windsor Locks, CT). During his time at Barnes Airport he was responsible for establishing the Audio Visual sections of the Air National Guard Base. He was also a member of the Board of Audio Visual Managers at the Pentagon and was an active participant in redrafting the audio visual regulations for the Air National Guard. He retired as the State Superintendent of Audio Visual with the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. During his career Robert received numerous military awards including the Air Force Commendation Medal with OLC, the Air Force Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal with OLC, The Air Force Reserve Medal, the US Army Good Conduct Medal, the Cold War Service Medal, the Master Flight Members wings, the Senior Mechanics badge, The Air Force Longevity ribbon and the Short-Term Overseas ribbon. Robert considered himself an artist and throughout his life he used different mediums to express himself. An avid photographer, Robert was the founder and president of the Pines-West camera club in Pembroke Pines, Florida. His photography work has won many awards including a gold medal at the New England Camera Club Council (NECCC) and many of his watercolor paintings sold both locally and in Florida. He happily spent many of his days at his drawing table surrounded by jars of colored pencils, tubes of paint and canvases to create on. Always the joiner, Robert was a life member of the DAV, life member of the Loyal Order of The Elks, Lodge #1849, Chicopee, Massachusetts and the Air Force Sergeants Association. At the forefront Robert was a family man who adored his children and grandchildren and was lucky to have loved two special women in his life. In his youth he enjoyed being a part of a big family of 8 kids. He was preceded in death by his parents Aurora DeLage and Philip DellaPenna, his siblings, Edith DellaPenna, Joe DellaPenna, Margaret Delphia (DellaPenna), Evelyn Leblanc (DellaPenna), Laurina Leback (DellaPenna), Alfred DellaPenna and Ruth Franks (DellaPenna) and his wife of 45 years Patricia Joan DellaPenna (Hartnett). Robert is survived by his two daughters, Pamela McCullough and her husband Steven McCullough of Chicopee, MA and Susan Goudreau and her husband Gary Goudreau of Stuart, Florida, his loving partner of the past fourteen years Linda O’Hara of Hollywood, Florida, his beloved grandchildren Melissa Buscemi and her husband David Buscemi, Zak McCullough, Marcus Goudreau and his fiancee Natalie Aguilar and Mckenize Goudreau and beloved many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial at Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam, on Fri. Jan. 17th at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the VA Central Western Massachusetts Healthcare System to help with the comfort and welfare of our veteran patients by sending a check to Voluntary Service, 421 N.
