Martin McAleer Sr.
Martin William Slattery McAleer, Sr., a decorated World War II veteran who fought in the Battle of the Bulge in the 103rd Infantry, died on Thursday at Ozanam Hall Nursing Home in Bayside, New York. He was 99 years old. Born April 4, 1920, McAleer was a proud member of the Greatest Generation. He was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained during the war as well as the Grand Cross of Homage after suffering severe frostbite in his feet and hands during military action in the Ardennes. After the war, McAleer worked as a lithographer at a printing company. McAleer is predeceased by his wife, Frances McAleer (nee Devers), who died in 2001. He is survived by his son, Timothy and his wife Janet, son Martin, Jr. and his wife Patricia, six grandchildren: Peter, Kevin, Timothy, Kerri, Bryan and Megan, and 11 great-grandchildren. A viewing will be held on Sunday, January 12th from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the New Hyde Park Funeral Home, 506 Lakeville Road, New Hyde Park. A funeral mass will be held on Monday, January 13th at 10 a.m. at St. Anne's church, 35 Dartmouth Street, Garden City. Entombment to follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to Ozanam hall Nursing Home, 42-41 201st Street, Bayside, N.Y.
