Robert Gritz, 85 Former history teacher at Curtis High School, avid Yankees fan Robert Gritz, 85, of Staten Island, N.Y., died peacefully on Jan. 10, 2020, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Brooklyn on March 14, 1934, where he grew up. He met his future wife, Marilyn, at a Brooklyn College dance in 1952. In 1957, Bob graduated with a master of arts degree from Brooklyn College, followed by his master's in education from Columbia. Bob was a history teacher at Curtis High School for 30 years. He was nicknamed the "walking encyclopedia" and known for his wit and humor. He had a lifelong love of world history, the arts, opera, ballet, and traveling. His favorite pastime was watching the Yankees. Robert is survived by his daughter, Susie Greenwald; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sons-in-law, nieces, a nephew, and several cousins. Robert was predeceased by his wife, Marilyn; daughter, Alysa, and son, Alexander. Viewing will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, at Harmon Funeral Home.
