In memory of
Jane (Kirschner) Russell
Jane Russell, née Kirschner, passed away peacefully at home on Dec. 4, 2019, after a long illness. She was born in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, on Oct. 15, 1933, to Carl E. and Lucile E. Kirschner, née Klotz. Her fondest memories of her childhood were of riding horses on her grandparents' farm in Pennsylvania. She attended Smith College and the University of New Mexico. In New Mexico, she married George Long and had two sons, Geoffrey and Warren. The family moved to the Bay Area in California, where Jane completed a B.A. in anthropology and a teaching certificate at U.C. Berkeley. She taught in public schools in Oakland and Berkeley for many years. Jane married David John Russell in 1971 and in 1975 they moved to Mendocino, California, where she lived the remainder of her life. Jane loved their house by the sea, surrounded by nature. She loved her garden and pets, and treasured her friends and family. Jane was a gifted pen and ink artist and her drawings were used as illustrations for several books and publications. Her curiosity and enthusiasm for life was infectious. Jane's family and friends will miss her greatly, especially her intelligent wit, humor, and warmth. Jane was predeceased by her sons, Geoffrey (1976) and Warren Long (2016); and her husband, David (2011). She is survived by her sister, Ann Wolfe, (McClean, Virginia); her granddaughter, Tallulah Long (Santa Monica, California); and step-grandson, Thomas Bergamaschi (Davis, California); and her stepchildren, Elizabeth R. Bickford (Hood River, Oregon), Ann Russell (Davis, California), David Russell (Little River, California) and Peter Russell (Comptche, California). In lieu of flowers, please send a donation in Jane's memory to Woodlands Wildlife, P.O. Box 1336, Mendocino, CA 95460 ( www.touchingwings.org ). Her family would like to thank Dr. John Rochat and the caregivers at Andersson for their sensitive work with Jane in her last years. A memorial gathering will be announced at a later date.
