Russell E. Von Glahn
Russell E. Von Glahn Yonkers - Russell Von Glahn, 94, of Montrose, formally of Yonkers, died on Saturday November 30, 2019 at Hudson Valley Hospital in Cortlandt Manor. He was born on January 27, 1925 to Vincent and Louise Masson Von Glahn in San Francisco, CA where he was raised and educated. Mr. Von Glahn was a bus mechanic at NYC Transit in New York City for many years until his retirement in 1984. He served his country proudly in the U.S. Navy in World War II from 1942 to 1945. He was a radioman 3rd class and was stationed in Normandy and Anzio. He was awarded a special commendation from the Navy for his heroism for fighting a fire on his vessel after an enemy attack and working feverishly to extinguish the fire. Mr. Von Glahn was a longtime member of VFW Post 1666 in Yonkers, serving as the post commander five times. He was also a past commander of the Westchester County VFW and belonged to the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed reading. In November 1944, he married his first wife, Geraldine Biondi. She died in January 1993. On June 8, 1996, he married his second wife, Myrtle Dixon at the Traveler's Rest Restaurant in Millwood, N.Y. Mrs. Von Glahn survives and lives in Yonkers. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a stepson William Schweigert of Mt. Vernon and two step grandchildren, Kristen and William Schweigert. He is also survived by a niece, Virginia Markman and a nephew, Robert Santini. He was predeceased by a daughter, Carol Scheerer in 2018. Visiting hours will be at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home on Tuesday 7-9pm and Wednesday 2-4 & 7-9pm. Funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Thursday December 5th at 10am. Interment will follow at Oakland Cemetery. Donations in his memory may be made to either St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the NYS Veterans Home at Montrose.
