Eleanor M. Kalbacher
Eleanor M. Kalbacher Remembered for her warm personality and strong faith Eleanor M. Kalbacher, 94, of Pompton Plains, N.J., formerly of Westfield, N.J., passed away peacefully on Nov. 21, 2019. Eleanor was born Feb. 28, 1925, to George and Eleanor (Fernbach) Fink of Brooklyn, N.Y., the eldest of three daughters. Lenore, a graduate of Bayside High School, N.Y., earned her associate's degree from Queens City College in 1944. She graduated from New York Hospital School of Nursing and received her bachelor of science degree from Cornell University (currently Cornell/New York Hospital School of Nursing) in 1947, specializing in the field of public health. While at New York Hospital, she met and married her loving husband, U.S. Army Lt. Joseph Kalbacher, MD. They moved their young family to Westfield in 1951, where four of their six children were born. Lenore supported her husband, Dr. Joseph E. Kalbacher, in the founding of the Westfield Pediatric Office. They raised their very active family and pursued their dreams in Westfield and at Caliban Lodge in the Adirondacks until his retirement from his pediatric office in 1987. Active in her community, she was a member of Echo Lake Country Club and served on the Westfield Board of Education. She spanned and supported three educational administrations. Having accomplished many of her dreams, Lenore was widowed too early in 1990. She continued to build friendships and build dreams in Allamuchy, N.J., Leesburg, Va., and as a snow bird in Boynton Beach, Fla., doting on her Virginia grandchildren and her Labrador retriever, "Charcoal." In 2015, Lenore relocated to Cedar Crest Village where she continued to establish many friends and her lifelong enjoyment of bridge. She is survived by her younger sister, Patricia O'Neill of Southold, N.Y., and her loving and supportive children, Margaret Teitelbaum and her husband, Steve of Sunset Beach, N.C.; Barbara Yarger and her husband, Richard of Yakima, Wash.; John Kalbacher and his wife, Karen of West Hartford, Conn.; Katherine Adelaar and her husband, Rick of Scotch Plains, N.J.; Jeanne Burdett and her husband, Bruce of Bristol, R.I., and Ellen Lidwin and her husband, Steve of Chantilly, Va. Lenore considered herself blessed by and proud of her 15 grandchildren. She enjoyed special relationships with Christina, Joe, Michael, and Jenny Lidwin, along with Christopher, Katie, and Anne Teitelbaum. In addition, her grandchildren, Nick Allen, Jeff and Brett Kalbacher; Erin and Kirsten Burdett; Amy, David and Fred Yarger were always in her thoughts and prayers. In addition, Lenore was blessed with seven great-grandchildren: Samantha Anne and Ava Grace Reeves; Madeline (deceased) and Emily-Rose Remy and John, Charles and Walter Yarger. Our beloved mother will be remembered for her cute smile, warm personality, strong faith, and deep love of family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Eleanor at Our Lady of Good Counsel, 155 W. Parkway, Pompton Plains, N.J., at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7. A visitation will be from 8:30 to 9 a.m. with a Rosary service at 9 a.m. at the M. John Scanlan Funeral Home, Pompton Plains, 973-831-1300. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Miller Cory House Museum, 614 Mountain Ave., Westfield, N.J. 07090 and The New York Hospital-Cornell University Alumni Association, Inc., Box 174, 1300 York Ave., New York, N.Y. 10065.
