WAYNESVILLE, Jon Carr Barbour, age 83, died on November 28 peacefully at home under the care of Haywood Hospice for respiratory failure. He was born November 15, 1936 in Burlington, NC to the late Joseph Parker Barbour and Viola Black Barbour. He is survived by Beverly Schimmel Barbour, his wife of 51 years, together with many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, his stepmother, Julia "Jackie" Poole Smith Barbour, brothers Joseph Parker Barbour, Jr., Robert L. Barbour and stepbrother James Edward Smith. He was a graduate of Williams High School, class of 1954. After graduation from UNC-Chapel Hill, he served in the US Army in Monterey, California and in Germany. He retired as an administrator at Georgia Institute of Technology in 1998 and moved to Waynesville, NC in 1999 where he served on the board of the Volunteer Center; tutored with the Literacy Council; helped maintain a portion of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail; and helped build the Waynesville playground. In lieu of flowers or a formal service, memorials may be made to the organization of your choice.
