Lucy Schmitt Poseyville, IN - Lucy M. Schmitt, 91, of Poseyville, IN passed away Wednesday, November 27, 2019 at the Pine Haven Health and Rehabilitation Center. Lucy was born March 3, 1928 in Mt. Vernon, IN to the late Joseph and Berndena (Mueller) Weinzapfel. She was very strong in her Catholic faith and a longtime member of St. Wendel Catholic Church and the Ladies' Sodality at St. Wendel. For many years, she walked for the Right to Life movement, 40 Days for Life. Lucy was a 1946 graduate of Memorial High School and a 1949 graduate of the St. Mary's Hospital Nursing School. She worked as a registered nurse and also farmed alongside her late husband, Raymond. She and Raymond were awarded the Master Farmer of the Year Award by the state of Indiana and the Centennial Award for their farm being in the family for over 100 years. Lucy enjoyed quilting; served for many years as the 4-H Leader at St. Wendel; she loved gardening and flowers and even ran her own business, Lucy's Perennials. Surviving Lucy are two daughters, Theresa (Fred Ott) Schmitt and Agnes (Henry) Reidford; sons, Patrick Schmitt, Leonard (Susan) Schmitt, Ralph (Carol) Schmitt and Carl Schmitt; one sister, Martha Schmitt; nine grandchildren, Bernard and Matthew Schmitt, Jennifer Keller, Natalie Gray, Marissa Weatherholt, Neal Reidford, Ross Schmitt, Reid Schmitt and Rick Jones; eighteen great grandchildren with one more on the way. In addition to her parents, Lucy was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Raymond Schmitt in 2004; by sisters, Mildred Blankenberger, Rose Nellis and Mary Margaret Mesker and by brothers, Louis and Charles Weinzapfel. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held at 10:00 AM on Monday, December 2, 2019 at St. Wendel Catholic Church, Rev. Eugene Schmitt and Rev. Ed Schnur officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Wendel Church Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 1:00 until 7:00 PM on Sunday at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 W. Franklin Street, where there will be a memorial service conducted by the church at 3:00 PM. Friends may also visit with the family from 9:30 AM until service time on Monday at St. Wendel Church. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Lucy's caregiver and friend, Gina Williams with Visiting Angels, to Dr. Mohammed Allaw, her sister, Martha Schmitt and Heritage Hospice for all of their loving, kind and compassionate care.
