Denis P. Kelleher
Loving father, husband, visionary business executive, community organizer, and philanthropist died November 22 on Staten Island, NY after battling a long-term illness. He will be missed for his business acumen, dedication to the betterment of the less fortunate, unending kindness, and his sharp wit. Born in 1939, in County Kerry, Ireland, Mr. Kelleher came to New York in 1958 seeking a better life. He earned a degree from St. John's University, where he later served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. He held senior positions at financial institutions including Partner at Ruane, Cunniff & Co.; President and Treasurer of Sequoia Fund; Founder of Discount Brokerage Corporation of America, and most recently Founder, President, and Chairman of Wall Street Access. He served as a Director of the Staten Island Foundation, was a recipient of the 1995 Ellis Island Medal of Honor, founded New World Preparatory Charter School in 2010, and was an ardent supporter of the Inner-City Scholarship Fund of the Archdiocese of New York. Mr. Kelleher also served as Treasurer of the Irish Historical Society; economic adviser to the Prime Minister of Ireland; and Grand Marshal of the 2005 New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade. He was a benefactor to the restoration of St Patrick's Cathedral; received an honorary Doctorate from the National University of Ireland; and was named to the Irish-American Hall of Fame. Mr. Kelleher is survived by his wife, the former Carol Cieslewicz, daughter Colleen and her husband Dr. Robert Sorrentino, son Denis and his wife Rachel, son Sean and his wife Wendy, and eight grandchildren--Bobby, Maggie, Jack, Caroline, Dylan, Zoe, Denis and Alex. Services, Casey Funeral Home Nov 30 7:00-9:00 pm and Dec 1 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 pm; Funeral Mass, St Ann's Church Dec 2 noon.
