Frederick T. Hassel Jr., 69 Devoted family man with an 'unmatchable work ethic' Frederick T. "Fred" Hassel Jr., 69, of Staten Island, N.Y., passed away on Nov. 8, 2019. Fred was born on Jan. 30, 1950, to Fred and Muriel Hassel. He was a Farrell alumni who graduated from Polytechnic Institute of New York and was a member of the Society for Marketing Professional Services. Fred enjoyed a successful engineering career and was a project manager for Gannett Fleming at the time of his passing. He survived both the 1993 and 2001 World Trade Center attacks. He was the beloved husband to Mary Ellen for 47 years. Fred was the devoted father to Fred, (Susan, grandsons, Freddy and Patrick) Kristen, (Alex, granddaughters, Zoe and Paris) and Thomas (Nadia, grandsons, Ryan and Carter). He was the loving brother to Beth, Richard, James, and Robert. Fred met his wife of 47 years while they were both working at Doctors' Hospital. They married and resided in Brooklyn with their three beautiful children before returning to New Dorp. Fred was an active member of Our Lady Queen of Peace church. He enjoyed playing golf, Duke basketball, and watching his grandchildren play sports. He spent many weekends gardening in his yard and helping his children with home repairs. Many summers were enjoyed visiting Ocean City, Md., and Atlantic City, N.J., with his family. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Fred will be remembered as a devoted family man with an unmatchable work ethic. His dedication will be missed by his wife, his problem-solving skills will be missed by his children, his hugs will be missed by grandchildren, and his love will be missed by all. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Fred's name to Autism Speaks. Visitation is Monday, 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m., at Hanley Funeral Home.
