Sybilla Avery Cook
Sybilla Avery Cook Aug. 20, 1930 - Oct. 27, 2019 Sybilla died at her home early Sunday, Oct. 27, 2019. Born in Buffalo, N.Y., she and husband John D. Cook moved to Roseburg, Ore., in 1976 after raising their family near Chicago, Ill. An educator, school librarian and author, she moved to Portland in 2010 after John died in 2007. Her book "Walking Portland" published in 1998 and 2013; she co-authored "Battle of The Books and More" in 2001 and 2004. Her last book, "Drawn Together in Art, Love, and Friendships; The Biography of Caldecott Award-winning Authors Berta and Elmer Hader" published in 2016. She is survived by her sons, Harold, Robert and Raymond Cook and wives, Faye, Carolyn and Marcia; grandchildren, Avery Cook, Matthew and Courtney Cook, Alyssa and Ben Messmer, Ana and Thomas Moura-Cook; and her great-grandchildren, Marlo and Atlas Cook. A service and celebration of her life will be held from 2 - 4 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 9, 2019, at Mirabella Portland, 3550 S.W.
