Robert Allen Fanning
Robert Allen Fanning November 3, 1931 to November 2, 2019 Founding partner and long time Chairman of the Board of the law firm of Fanning, Harper, Martinson, Brandt and Kutchin, passed away on November 2, 2019. Born in Dallas on November 3, 1931, the second son of Charles Allen Fanning and Beryl Buckner Fanning. He attended Woodrow Wilson High school until the second semester of his junior year when the family moved to Harlingen, Texas where he graduated in 1949 from Brownsville High School. He attended Baylor University obtaining a BBA in 1953. While attending SMU night law school and working days as an insurance claim adjustor, he joined the US Air Force where he rose to the rank of first lieutenant while serving in Japan in the JAG corp. He was honorably discharged in 1957 when he picked back up on his legal education, graduating from SMU Law School with a J.D degree in 1960. He was married to Carolyn Parker Fanning from 1960 until her death in 2006. He married Margaret Sharpe Fanning in 2008, who was a loving and wonderful companion and who faithfully cared for him until the time of his death. He is preceded in death by his Brother, Charles Buckner Fanning, daughter in law, Rebecca Cobbs Fanning and nephew, Justin Louis Fanning. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Sharpe Fanning, his two sons Barry Fanning and Marc Fanning, and his five grand children, Charlie Fanning, Kristin Fanning, Kayla Fanning, Ashley Meth and Ryan Fanning. Bob was a long time member of Park Cities Baptist Church and for a number of years attended the Bob and Ruth Glaze Sunday School Class. He was involved in a number of philanthropic activities including his life time involvement with San Marcos Baptist Academy located in San Marcos, Texas where he served on its Board of Directors for more than 40 years and also served as the Chairman of its Board. For his tenure of service he was awarded the Distinguished and Exemplary Service Medals from the Academy. He also served as the Chairman of the Dinner Committee for the Russell H. Perry Free Enterprise Award Dinner for Dallas Baptist University for which he was later awarded a Doctorate in Humanities from DBU in 1997 for his efforts. He also served on the board of a number of organizations including Southern Methodist University Law School, Board of Visitors Southern Methodist University Law School, Alumni Board Southern Baptist Convention, Vice Chairman, Board of Trustees, Annuity Board National Board of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Trustee Council for Institutional Development, Baylor University, Member Dallas Baptist University Foundation, Member, Board of Directors Park City Club, Presiding Officer, Board of Governors, Defense Research Institute, Member, Southern Methodist University Law School, Executive Board. Bobs lifetime love of boating allowed him to entertain his family and friends to a number of fabulous trips throughout the United States and Canada, many of them up and down the East Coast of the U.S. He will be remembered most for his generosity in helping people accomplish their goals and become the best that they could be. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at 300 p.m. in the main sanctuary at Park Cities Baptist Church located at 3933 W. Northwest Hwy, University Park, TX with a reception immediately following in Ellis Parlor.
