Thomas P. Walsh
Thomas P. Walsh, 87 Retired NYPD assistant chief; longtime SI resident It is with great sadness that the family of Thomas P. Walsh, 87, announce his passing Monday, Nov. 4, 2019, at Richmond University Medical Center. Born Oct. 17, 1932, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of the late Thomas M. Walsh and Elizabeth Shelly. A resident of West Brighton for 55 years, Tom attended Sacred Heart School and Tottenville High School and John Jay College. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, earning four medals. He later spent 35 years as a proud member of the NYPD, attaining the rank of assistant chief, with his last command being Patrol Borough Manhattan South. In this capacity he coordinated the security of numerous presidents and world leaders while visiting New York City. For many years, Tom was heavily involved in the Sacred Heart School and Church community as a former Youth Activities Council president, Holy Name Society member, and baseball and basketball coach. His passions included watching Notre Dame college football, NY Giants football and Mets baseball. In addition, Tom was an avid reader. Later in life, he enjoyed spending time at his vacation home in the Hideout community of the Poconos, Pa., which was a part of his life for 23 years. He was predeceased by his wife of 52-1/2 years, Dawn M. Walsh (nee Geidel, 2005); son, Terence (Margie) Walsh (1992), and his infant children, Matthew (1962) and Patricia (1971). He will be lovingly remembered by his surviving children: Thomas (Linda) Walsh of Aliquippa, Pa., Diane Casserly (Gene) of West Brighton and Jeanne Panzarino (Chris) of Clinton, N.J. He will also be fondly remembered by his grandchildren, Terence (Sarah), David (Siobhan), Dorothy (Frank), Tommy (Veronica), Brian (Marisa), Matthew, Patrick (Jenna), Thomas, Zach, and Taylor; great-grandchildren, Isabella, Isaiah, Maximo, Fiona, Shana, and Isla and sister, Eileen (Bob) Elliott. Visitation will be held Thursday, Nov. 7 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Harmon Funeral Home, 517 Forest Ave., 10310. A Christian Mass will be celebrated Friday, Nov. 8 at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart R.C. Church, 981 Castleton Ave., 10310. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Kramer St. and Parkinson Ave., 10305.
